Sr. Java Developer - Business Applications
Job Summary
As a Sr. Java Developer within Comcast Business Global (CBG), you will be responsible for developing and maintaining software applications that support both customer-facing platforms and internal business operations. Joining the software engineering group in CBG, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to understand requirements, design effective solutions, and implement high-quality code. While you are still acquiring advanced knowledge and skills, you will work with a firm grasp of programming fundamentals and continuously build your expertise in organizational processes, customer needs, and technology. You will contribute to mission-critical applications for Comcast Business, with moderate guidance and direction as you grow in your role.Job Description
General Skills:
- Agile Development: Participates effectively in Agile/Scrum ceremonies and helps improve team execution through better refinement, sizing, and delivery practices.
- Adaptability: Responds quickly to changing priorities and business goals; adjusts technical direction while protecting delivery outcomes.
- Proactive Learning: Seeks new assignments and ambiguity to expand domain and platform expertise; quickly turns discoveries into repeatable team practices.
- Skill Development: Develops adjacent skills across platform operations (Kubernetes), data (Oracle), security, and observability to deliver end-to-end solutions.
- Problem Solving: Drives complex problems to closure by identifying unknowns early, validating assumptions incrementally, and managing technical risk.
Role-Specific Skills (Engineer IV Expectations):
- Domain Leadership Beyond Backlog: Demonstrates domain leadership across a broader area than the immediate team’s backlog by understanding upstream/downstream impacts, identifying cross-team process/product improvements, and influencing roadmap decisions using data and technical insight.
- Reliability & Security Leadership: Leads reliability and security improvements impacting multiple services/teams (monitoring standards, SLOs, incident response improvements, dependency risk reduction). Ensures solutions are supportable, auditable, and production-ready.
- Mentorship Across Boundaries: Mentors engineers outside the immediate team (e.g., enabling adoption of shared libraries/services). Sets direction through influence rather than authority and is sought out for guidance on complex topics.
- Cross-Team Communication & Alignment: Operates effectively in cross-team settings—aligns stakeholders, resolves conflicts, documents decisions, and drives consensus. Produces clear, durable artifacts (design docs, runbooks, postmortems) that serve as references.
- Quality at Scale: Raises quality beyond the team by introducing and standardizing practices adopted by others. Diagnoses systemic quality issues and leads remediation initiatives.
Required Technical Skills:
- Java (Advanced): Strong expertise with modern Java (e.g., 11/17/21), including performance tuning, concurrency fundamentals, and maintainable OO/design patterns.
- Spring Boot / Spring Ecosystem (Expert): Deep experience building production services with Spring Boot (Spring MVC, validation, configuration, actuator), and Spring Security fundamentals.
- Microservices & API Design: Builds and maintains robust REST APIs (versioning, backward compatibility, error contracts, idempotency, pagination).
- Oracle & Data Layer: Strong experience with Oracle databases, SQL, schema design, transactions, indexing, and performance analysis. Comfortable diagnosing slow queries and designing reliable data access patterns (JPA/Hibernate and/or JDBC where appropriate).
- Observability & Production Readiness: Implements logging, metrics, tracing, dashboards, and actionable alerts; defines SLOs/SLIs and improves operational hygiene (runbooks, on-call readiness).
- Testing & Quality: Strong unit/integration testing (JUnit 5, Mockito, Spring Test). Enforces quality gates and reduces regressions.
- CI/CD & Git Workflows: Proficiency with Git-based collaboration, code reviews, branching strategies, and CI/CD pipelines (build, test, security scanning, deploy).
- Security & Dependency Hygiene: Secure coding practices, secrets handling, vulnerability management (CVEs), and upgrade planning for Spring/Java dependencies.
Personal Traits/Characteristics:
- Ownership: Takes end-to-end accountability for delivery and operational outcomes; drives issues to resolution without repeated follow-ups.
- Accountability: Owns mistakes and learns quickly; drives corrective and preventive actions (not just immediate fixes).
- Open-Mindedness: Lets new information change decisions appropriately; communicates tradeoffs clearly.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Experience: Typically 8–12+ years software engineering experience with strong, recent hands-on Java/Spring Boot delivery in production; demonstrated leadership on cross-team, multi-sprint initiatives.
